SEO Friendly URL

Example :

Non SEO friendly URL: http://www.yourdomainname.com/page.php?page_id=103

SEO friendly URL: http://www.yourdomainname.com/seo-friendly-url

Next and one of the important step for your SEO process is to have a SEO friendly URL. Your URL’s should be short well structured URLs relevant keywords which will be easy for search engines and users as they convey the meaning of the page and overall site structure.

You should always avoid:

Long SEO unfriendly URLs with lots of unnecessary parameters

Underscore between 2 words

Over use of query parameters, hyphens or underscores, keywords, folders or special characters of any kind

File type extensions for your pages

Ideally your site URLs should be short and contain keywords that are relevant to the content on the page (but do not over do it).

You can make your URL SEO friendly in various way:

1) If you using CMS then you can simply install plugin or module or component

WordPress: ALL in once SEO (http://www.deanlee.cn/wordpress/permalinks-migration-plugin/)

Joomla: sh404SEF (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/sef/10134) or

JoomSEF (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/sef/1063)

Drupal: Pathauto (http://drupal.org/project/pathauto)

If you using your own cms / php site / html site or any other options you can change URLs with .htaccess file

Option 1) Use .htaccess URL rewrite generator (http://www.myseotool.com/free-seo-tools/htaccess-url-rewrite-generator.php)

or Option 2) Create your own rewrite rule refer this blog (http://zenverse.net/seo-friendly-urls-with-htaccess/)

So according to me keep URL’s as short as possible and as close to the home page as possible.

Setup Google Analytics

Hello again, as I have decided to bring my site back to Google listing I have started building my website completely from scratch. So first step was to install Google analytics/ add analytics profile or you can say add code to my site so my Google analytics profile will start getting data.

Steps

1) I have my own profile setup for old site so I will be using same profile for this site but if you need to create on for yourself you can visit Google analytics and create your account and profile. (http://www.google.com/analytics/)

2) Once you have your profile created you will be asked to added code to your site also know as install google analytics to your site.

Tracking Code, Google Analytics setup

3) Once you have code from google you can simply paste in footer or header of your site or if you using cms then you can use plugins / modules/ components for your cms.

WordPress: Google Analytics for WordPress (plugin link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analytics-for-wordpress )

Drupal: http://drupal.org/project/google_analytics

Joomla: Module link: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/site-analytics/1233 (I personally gave up using modules and components from my past experiences. You can simple copy code use custom html module paste code in and set module location to footer or header and save it. Job done

4) Well once you install analytics correctly you should be able to see this message on Google analytics profile:

google analytics status message

If I am not wrong on first installation it will say awaiting for data and after a day or so it will show you above status but If there is any problem in code or google analytics is not able to find code on your site it will give you error message instead of above message.

Hope step one helps you to start your SEO process. Keep reading I will post loads of information here.

Google penalized my website

Hello Reader,

I have decided to get my site listed again in search engine…. due to previous hack on my site I lost ranking and indexation for my site. I was on page one position 6 now I am not listed in first 30 pages on Google. (I did not checked any further). About 3 months before I installed wrong / unknown component on my joomla site and that component automatically posted my site links to bad Neighbourhood sites even though I deleted component from panel my site was still infected and showing 1000′s of link to my site from various bad neighbourhood sites. To prevent further problems I deleted my site completely and after few days link started dropping just. I reinstalled fresh copy of my site from local host when I say just handful of links left now but my bad luck site got hacked after 1 month of fresh hosting by some stupid hacker in result I am paying penalty now for my site.

So main problem

links in bad Neighbourhood

No indexation till first 30 pages on google

Brand new site with all new links address and pages.

Challenge:

Bring site back on first page with all the previously ranking keywords.

Plan:

I will post daily updates on things I am implementing on my site to achieve this results and what tools I am using if possible with screenshots / Tutorial / and step by step guide / solution to achieve target.

If your site is/ was effected / had same problem please give me suggestion that you did to achieve results back or follow the steps I am following to achieve my results. You can also use this process for general SEO on your site even if it is not effected or penalised by Google or any search engines.

First Target: Get site ranking for Keyword “Siddharth” and “Siddharth Shah”

Please follow rest of the post on this topic on daily basis.

Google penalty

An interesting thread on WebmasterWorld forums discusses ways to diagnose a possible Google penalty. If you suspect your site / URL is being filtered out / penalized (e.g. you have lost some Google rankings), try doing the following:

Dig your internal traffic analytics for traffic drops or bad trends;

Perform [site:yoursite.com] search in Google to see if Google reports same number of indexed URLs;

Check if Google Webmaster Tools report any problems;

Take a look if Google toolbar PR has changed (graybar PR might be a signal of penalty);

Check your site ranking for a “domain-name” search (without the TLD).

If such a query puts you in the fifties, it’s almost (!) guaranteed to be a penalty.

Check if Google has blacklisted your site as unsafe for browsing (type http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=mysite.com with your domain at the end).

Check the source code for any injected links to obvious “bad neighborhood” sites;

Check your other sites. In some cases Google seems to devalue the WHOIS domain owner and this results in a simultaneous ranking drop in several sites under the same domain account.

Copy a long phrase from your page and search Google for the exact match – make sure this very page (not the home page, not other sites scraping yours) is ranked #1;

Check if your URL can only be seen by adding &filter=0 to the search URL – or clicking on the “show omitted results” link (this means you were hit by the duplicate content penalty);

Any other? Please share your way to diagnose a penalty.

Search Engine Optimisation

7 SEO Mistakes to avoid at all Costs

Starting your own SEO campaign is a rewarding and worthwhile task, but the process is littered with pitfalls leading many people to fall at the first hurdle. Many of these mistakes are easy to avoid, so with that in mind, here are the top SEO mistakes to steer well clear of.

1. Leaving it too late.

Even when they know the importance of SEO many people fall into the trap of starting their campaign too late. It’s no good building your website without considering technical applications that will help the SEO process (like an SEO-friendly content management system). Remember, it’s easier to start early than have to retrace your steps and make changes.

2. Using anchor text badly

Too many sites use anchor text such as “click here” or “more” where they should be using words or phrases to help search engines understand what the page is about.

3. Targeting the wrong keywords

Many people make this mistake by using keywords that they believe describes what their site does, but in reality a member of the public would never search for. Picking the right keywords is integral to the success of your SEO campaign, so choose wisely. If you need some help, try using one of the many free online keyword suggestion sites.

4. Building a Flash website without an HTML alternative

Flash may look pretty but it’s far from attractive to search engines. If you feel a Flash-based website is necessary, then make sure you provide an HTML version too as search engine spiders can’t read Flash content and therefore cannot index it.

5. Over optimising your pages

Now I know I’ve been banging on at you about SEO and you’re now probably raring to go but first, a word of warning: don’t overdo it. Throwing in keyword after keyword in your pages will make the experience worse for your user and look like you are more bothered about SEO rankings than your customers.

6. Concentrating too much on meta tags

Too many people believe meta tags to be an important part of their SEO campaign, when in reality, they are pretty much obsolete. By all means create your meta tag keywords but don’t expect big results – concentrate your efforts somewhere else.

7. Trying to do everything on your own

These are all things that you can avoid without any help, but to really start climbing the search engine rankings you are going to need some help. There is some excellent SEO software which will help you manage your SEO, record your progress, build links and compare yourself with your competitors, all for as little as £99 a month. You can only do so much yourself and investing in SEO software is an important step if you want your website to be successful.

In February 2004, Mark Zuckerberg changed the way we use the internet forever by launching the social networking site that needs no introduction – Facebook. Before Facebook there was no “poking”, no stalking your exe to see if they’re seeing someone else, no Farmville, and now look at us! Say whatever you like about the social media giant but ignore it at your peril.

With over 400 million active users worldwide, ranking high on Facebook should be a priority for anyone looking to optimise their online business for search engines and social media. To be successful within the social media scene you have to target the biggest market and they don’t come any bigger than Facebook.

So, here are our top 5 tips to get you up those Facebook search engine rankings:

1. Make your content ‘Public’

There have been a lot of scaremongering regarding the problems Facebook users have had with their privacy settings, but when it comes to your business, put them to the back of your mind. The more people who can see your profile, the better. This allows people to search for your content and find it through the inbuilt Facebook search engine which can only be a good thing.

2. Remember the key elements – Likes, Shares and Number of Mutual Friends

The amount of different people who ‘like’ and share your content will help you rank higher, just as when searching for individuals the number of mutual friends helps too. The more of this interaction you can get going with other Facebook users, the better you will do in the Facebook Search rankings.

3. Keep up to date with developments

There’s no better place to keep abreast of what’s going on at Facebook Towers than on the Facebook Blog, so check it regularly. It is likely things will change that will affect the way we optimise our pages on Facebook so keep an eye out and you can be the first to adapt accordingly.

4. Use what you already know

Using keywords in the titles and URLs of your pages is integral to any type of SEO and Facebook is no different. Make sure you optimise the titles of your blog posts or group names just as you would with any other website or page. When writing a status, ensure it contains a reasonable amount of keywords and synonyms (but don’t go over the top – try and write like a user would!)

5. Keep your content fresh

More so than in any other optimisation, timeliness is key to getting to the top of the Facebook Search rankings. Massive emphasis is put on real time updates so if you add a keyword-rich status and then someone writes something similar minutes after; it is likely they will rank higher as their status is more recent. You must update your page regularly, with interesting, original, good quality content to increase your chances of success in this oversaturated social media market.

So there you have it, 5 tips to help you reach some of those 400 million that spend their days on Facebook – enjoy, but don’t get distracted!
